Glaucoma is a condition in which there is increased pressure within your pet's eye. It occurs when the fluid produced inside the eye doesn't drain properly, causing a buildup of painful pressure within the eye. If this fluid buildup and pressure is left untreated, it will cause the eye to enlarge and become misshapen, and the eventual result will be irreversible blindness.

Glaucoma can be primary or secondary to another eye disease that is causing a problem with drainage of fluid from inside the eye. Primary glaucoma is rare in cats and common in dogs. Secondary glaucoma in cats is almost always the result of chronic inflammation of the eye (uveitis).

Glaucoma in pets is thought to cause pain similar to a headache, and probably migraine-level pain. There are many symptoms to watch for, ranging from changes in your pet's behavior, to a dilated pupil or bulging eye, to loss of vision in one eye.

Treatment of glaucoma will depend on its cause and severity. There are many drugs, both topical and oral, to treat glaucoma, but they work much better for humans than they do for pets. Unfortunately, the best treatment for dogs who have lost vision due to glaucoma is to remove the affected eye. This provides the best long-term relief for the animal.

There are steps pet owners can take to reduce the risk their pet will develop glaucoma, including dietary supplements, reducing or eliminating stressors in the environment, and using harness-leash combinations on dogs rather than collars and leashes.
