Tracheal collapse is a chronic, progressive disease of the trachea that primarily strikes certain small breed dogs.

Tracheal collapse can be either congenital (present from birth) or acquired. The acquired form of the condition is often caused by chronic respiratory disease, Cushing's disease or heart disease.

Symptoms of tracheal collapse include a dry cough, exercise intolerance, respiratory distress, and gagging while eating or drinking.

Treatment options include medical management, which works for about 70 percent of dogs with a mild form of the condition. More serious cases often require highly specialized surgery. Cartilage building supplements are also given to maintain the integrity of tracheal cartilage.
